Three-Pencil Coloring Fun for Kids

Can you color a whole picture with just three colored pencils? Give it a try! Three-pencil coloring is a simple activity for kids: choose just three colors and see what you can create. The same butterfly could have yellow wings with red patterns or blue wings with yellow spots. Simply swap the colors around to create a completely different picture.

What will you need?

  • One coloring page, ideally with large, clearly defined spaces.
  • Three colored pencils in different colors.
  • A second copy of the same picture if you want to compare two ideas.

Start with a simple butterfly, flower, or animal. These printable butterfly pictures work well because the wings make it easy to repeat colors and swap them around. If your child prefers flowers or trees, explore these plant coloring sheets.

How do you color with three pencils?

  1. Choose three colors. Let your child pick their favorite pencils. For a first try, we suggest yellow, blue, and red.
  2. Start anywhere you like. There’s no need to plan the whole picture first. You can begin with a wing, a petal, or an animal’s tummy.
  3. Repeat colors in different places. One pencil can fill lots of different parts. You don’t need a separate color for every space.
  4. Leave some white spaces if you like. The background and some details can stay uncolored. You don’t have to fill the entire sheet.
  5. Take a look at the finished picture. See which color you used the most and what catches your eye first.

The colors don’t have to be realistic. A blue cat or red leaves can be part of an imaginary world. Using three pencils is just a rule for the game, not a test. If your child wants to add a fourth color or finish early, it’s fine to change the plan.

One picture, two different ways

Print your chosen picture twice and use the same three pencils for both copies. On the first butterfly, try yellow upper wings, blue lower wings, and red spots. On the second, make the upper wings blue, the lower wings red, and the spots yellow.

Place the pictures side by side. What changed the most? Which details are easier to notice now? You can even give the butterflies names. Compare your ideas without choosing a “better” picture.

This is also a fun activity for siblings or a child and parent. Everyone gets the same picture and the same set of colors, but decides for themselves where each color goes.

Three variations to try next

  • Pick colors at random. Put the pencils in a pencil case you can’t see through and draw out three. See what you can create with your surprise color combination.
  • Let one color take the lead. Choose one pencil for the largest spaces and use the other two for the details.
  • Try lighter and darker areas. Start with light strokes, then add another layer with the same pencil. Notice how the color becomes richer.

All you need to get started is one picture and three colored pencils.
